What is an Optical Network Terminal?

An Optical Network Terminal, or ONT, is the physical endpoint of a fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network. These can therefore be used by both consumers in the home or businesses. They can be installed internally and externally, enabling a direct fibre connection.

How does an ONT work?

Not to be mistaken for routers, an ONT converts data, that’s transmitted by the provider as light, into electrical signals. This is a two-way gateway that converts user-generated data into optical signals to send back across the internet. The ONT transmits data via ethernet ports to a router, computer, or other connected devices. This enables a fibre network connection.

Can an ONT be repaired?

ONTs typically remain fixed to a property. If the occupant moves or the supply changes, the router is returned to the provider.

At Ingram Micro Lifecycle, we provide the following services for ONTs:

  • Fulfillment
  • Modification
  • Test
  • Refurbishment and repair

Repair and refurbishment services can be triggered by a fault with the product, the timely replacement by the network operator, or the end of a contract (if required by the provider).

If you would like to know more about how Ingram Micro Lifecycle supports the circularity and value recovery of ONTs, please contact us today.
